Q: What is Edox Translations?
A: Edox Translations stands for Electronic Documents Translations and is a human translation and localization service for text, websites and software. The translations are never done with automatic translation software, but by native speaker professional translators, most of whom hold a University degree in translation and a degree in other areas of expertise.

Q: What do you translate?
A: We translate a wide variety of documents in multiple fields and in almost any file format, including .doc, .rtf, .txt, .xls, .pdf, .tif, .jpg, .ttx, .ppt, .html, .php, .xml etc. We also translate and localize websites and software. Our main languages are English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian. We specialize in the following fields: corporate communication, public relations, marketing, advertising, management, business, economics, banking, finance, Internet, travel and leisure, media, journalism, EU and international affairs, politics.


Orders

Q: How do I order?
A: Please send us your request using the online order form. Alternatively, send us an email with your document attached, specifying the language(s) for the translation, the desired completion date and your contact details. We will shortly provide you with a free quotation.

Q: How do I receive my translated materials?
A: Translated documents are usually returned in the same format as the original document. Please contact us if you require a different format.


Scheduling, Turnaround Time

Q: When will my translation be delivered?
A: Turnaround time primarily depends on the length and technicality of the text. The average output you may expect is 1,500 words per day. Delivery dates agreed upon are specified in our initial contract together. We guarantee that deadlines are observed, provided that we duly receive from you any information or clarifications required to carry out the task.

Q: How soon can you start working on my translation?
A: Before proceeding to a translation, all project details shall be spelled out in a purchase order that you will need to sign and send to us. We will commence work as soon as we receive the signed purchase order from you.


Fees and Payments

Q: How much will it cost?
A: Our translation services are priced on a per word basis, which provides a fair, transparent and easy calculation of the overall price. Most word processing tools, such as Microsoft Word, include a “word count” feature. There are no hidden fees and no surprises - the price is agreed upon beforehand and stated in your purchase order.

Q: What is the payment schedule?
A: Payment terms are specified in the contract. When you receive your translation, you will also receive an invoice with all the information required to make the payment according to the terms of the contract.

On a general basis, private individuals are asked to pay within 5 days from the date of invoice, unless otherwise specified. In the case of corporate customers, payment terms may be negotiated according to the importance of the contract (volume, repeat business etc.)

Please note that an advance deposit is normally required for new customers with orders over 100 EUR.

Q: What types of payments does Edox Translations accept?

A: Edox Translations accepts payments via wire transfer, Paypal or Moneybookers. Our invoice will include all necessary payment details.

Glossary of Frequently Used Industry Terms

Q: What is translation?
A: Translation is the process of converting a written document from one language into another. It often involves terminology research in both source and target languages, creating and maintaining multilingual glossaries and translation memories, as well as applying formatting to the final document(s). Translation can be performed by both humans and machines, with greatly differing results.

Q: What is localization?
A: Localization, also known as L10n, is the process of adapting a product (website, software and related documentation) for use in a different country, culture or region. Typically, this includes translating text and ensuring support of different character sets, if necessary, as well as adapting information such as dates, units of measurement, currency. Localization is more than translation, because it involves cultural adaptation and therefore requires thorough knowledge of the local culture and practices.

Q: What is computer-aided translation (CAT)?
A: Computer-aided translation, computer-assisted translation or CAT refers to software tools that can assist translators in their work. These can include: spell checkers, grammar checkers, translation memory software, terminology management software, alignment software. The main advantage of using CAT tools during translation is that of consistency of terminology and style within and across documents.

Q: What is machine translation?
A: Machine translation or automatic translation is translation carried out by computer software rather than by a human translator. Machine translation tools cannot accurately render contextual meaning, subtleties, complexities and nuances of a language, unlike a human translator can.

Q: What does source language mean?
A: The original language of a text requiring translation.

Q: What does source text mean?
A: Source text is the original text requiring translation into a different language.

Q: What does target language mean?
A: Target language is the language into which the source text is to be translated.

Q: What does target text mean?
A:  Target text is the output of the translation process, i.e. the text which was translated into a different language.

Q: What is word count?
A: The number of words in the source text. Word processing tools such as Microsoft Word include a word count feature. To count words in a document using Microsoft Word, click the “Word Count” function on the “Tools” menu. To add or remove footnotes and endnotes from the count, select or clear the “Include footnotes and endnotes” check box.
